Livestock & Dairy: Bakewell Market

Bakewell Market Report Thursday 1st January

Another wet and windy Monday with 666 cattle and 1,627 sheep on offer.

Trade generally good with most sections close to last week’s averages.

The exception was the store & breeding cattle, they looked a good price last week, but things have moved up a notch.

We appealed for entries last week and the vendors responded well with a larger turnout of 367.

Fresh buyers were operating and there was fierce competition at all price levels.

Steers sold to £2,540 average £1,703, heifers to £2,180 ave £1,472 and feeding bulls reached £2,380 to average £1,360.

In the breeding section cows r/w bull sold to £1,900 and a 56 month old Char stock bull made £3,200.

Finished cattle numbers down a bit at 127.  Trade solid with the best to 478p/kg and £3,441.76.

The average for the 63 heifers was 366.1 pence, a shade less than last week.

131 OTM cattle on offer with top figures 355p/kg and £2,705 per head.

The average looked good at 250.0p and £1,652 per head.

39 calves this week with demand very keen bulls sold to £680 and heifers £630.

In the sheep section decent entry of 1,229 hoggs peaked at 421p/kg and £200.36 per head.

The SQQ average was a touch better than last week and lambs in the 39-45kg range averaged £151.47.

A larger entry of 390 cull sheep saw ewes selling to £264 to average £134.75.

390 Ewes & Rams

Auctioneers Mark Elliott & Holly Swift)

Good numbers but a very varied entry with a good show of well fleshed ewes at the top end but perhaps a higher proportion of horned types when compared to the last 2 Mondays.

Generally, the trade strong particularly for the best end.  Top price for Les Hadfield at £264 with a smart Texel with the Jones family and Harry Young all with £250 and above for their dearest pens.  The top 8 pens averaged £231 per head.

There were runs of Mules forward but in fairness virtually no heavy framed biggest types.  Medium Mules in the £140 mark.

The weather is telling now on the plain old ewes and lack of flesh obviously affects price.

In the rams a good number of 30 forward with spirited bidding.  Better Texel tups £189-£207, plainer light weight Texels £95-£120.

Ewes average £135.81               100% clearance

Rams average £148.71              100% clearance
