Livestock & Dairy: Bakewell Market

Bakewell Market Report Monday 2nd March

At last, a few drier days and milder temperatures.

Decent entries of stock with 723 cattle and 1,199 sheep on offer consigned by 227 vendors.

Trade good in most departments with the OTM average well up on the week and trade for hoggs very healthy at 372p.

A useful entry of 375 store & breeding cattle maintained recent price levels for a very mixed selection.  Buyers were present from considerable distances and all types of cattle found a ready market.

Steers reached £2,500 to average £1,547 for an entry which included a high proportion of small/young cattle.

Heifers topped at £2,110 to average £1,382 and feeding bulls sold to £1,780 ave £1,250.

If Spring really is on its way many vendors will be relieved as signs of a shortage of bedding are evident in some consignments.

A large entry of 170 finished cattle saw prices a shade easier.  Top figures at 430p and £3,063 per head looked good, but the average for the 98 heifers was down a bit at 361.3 pence.

OTM’s were out in force with 131 forward.  Trade was strong with top figures 350p/kg and £3,511 per head.  The average was particularly good at 263.0 pence and £1,739 per head.

Calf numbers steady at 47 with trade at a very high level, bulls sold to £645 and heifers £650.

In the sheep section numbers were down, but trade more than satisfactory.

The 1,068 finished hoggs looked well sold with top figures 456p/kg and £214 per head.

The SQQ average was 372.0 pence making a typical lamb in the 39-45kg bracket worth £160.36.

Only a small selection of cull sheep with ewes to £266 to average £126.63.

STORE & BREEDING CATTLE – (Auctioneers Alastair Sneddon & Meg Elliott)

Another useful entry of 375 store cattle with plenty of buyers present and a strong trade from start to finish.

Fewer strong short finish cattle in the entry and a good many smaller types some showing the results of last year’s drought and a shortage of fodder and bedding.

Nevertheless, there were bidders present to cater for all sizes, ages and qualities as the following results will demonstrate.

There were no breeding cattle a deficiency that will be made up next week when there is a substantial special entry of in calf cows, see poster at the beginning of the report.
