Bakewell Market Report Monday 9th March

Another excellent gathering of stock in all departments with a total of 742 cattle and 1715 sheep on offer from a total of 244 vendors.

 

Store cattle numbers totalled 466 and included a dispersal of 53 organic suckler cows, being a mixture of Hereford and Angus x cows which created significant interest and selling to a top of £2370.

Store cattle continued at recent strong rates with tops of £2460 and an overall average of £1605.

 

Oliver reported an improved trade for the 119 head of finished cattle which sold to a full line up of buyers with steers to 421p/kg and £3254 and heifers to 444p/kg and £3125.  Averages up on last week with heifers at 371.44 and steers 367.94p/kg.

 

OTM numbers back slightly at 116 with trade continuing at recent rates to return an average of 259.48p/kg and tops of 330p/kg and £3,507 per head.

 

Calves strong for all types with young calves to £700 and some older reared types to a top of £1010.

 

Sheep trade on fire with a total of 1388 hoggs returning an SQQ average of 408.42p/kg.  All types meeting fierce demand to £232 per head and 490p/kg.

327 cull sheep all being good to sell with strong continentals peaking at £258.

Plenty of weighted bulls again today with the best big lads at 429 and 420p for David Goddard.  Nine natives saw Hereford to 341p and 5 B/W’s also in the entry which had their effect on the entry.

Better sold on the week with the averages nicely up.  Don Lownds had a super run today with his best B Blue x at 421p (£2610) while Charlotte Hadfield also had £4 for her Limousin.  A trio of big Limmys for S Hambleton all sold over £3000 to a high of £3254.  8 Natives saw Hereford to 374p and Angus to 388p.

The special entry of 53 in calf cows from the Harvey family of Weaver topped at £2370 for a Limousin due in May, others to £2280, £2180 and £2140.

Just one cows & calf outfit both by the Blue reached £2520.

An increased entry of 1715 included a good show of 1388 lambs.  Trade beyond all expectations with best Texels to 490p/kg and 15 pens over 450p/kg with a top gross of £132/head.  A run of 182 all off keep sold to 465p ave 422.92p/kg and a run of 50 straight off turnips at Skegness ave 432p/kg.  Overall average 408.42p/kg up almost 35p/kg on the week. Even Jacobs were to 404p/kg.

A very different entry this week with better quality and style and some well fed groups throughout the day.

Top price £258 for Texels from the Barratt family at Combs with David Wartig close behind at £256.

Well meated Mules towards £170 and runs of lighter Mules £140+.

More buyers for horned types and to be fair these pens were better meated throughout that in the previous 3 weeks.  Better end Swales £106+.

The best eight pens averaged exactly £250/head.

Slaughter rams good to sell with better Texels £174 plus and a top today of £185.
