Bakewell Market Report Monday 23rd March

A good solid turnout with 645 cattle and 1,199 sheep on offer and trade generally good.

 

Store & breeding cattle numbers well over 100 up on the week at almost 400 head.  Trade very strong after recent Spring weather and plenty of confidence around the ring.

The entry included a special retirement dispersal from H Willison from Whitwell, Worksop.

Charolais cow & calf outfits sold at up to £3,800 with others at £3,300 and £3,250.

In the regular stores the best steers topped at £2,720 to average £1,607 for an entry including a good many young cattle.

Heifers peaked at £2,380 and feeding bulls £2,080.

 

108 finished cattle – a few less than last week sold on a solid trade with top figures 450p/kg and £3,338 per head.

The average for the 69 heifers was 376.9 pence and a respectable £2,429 per head.

 

A few more OTM cattle on offer with 95 this week.  Top figures 350p/kg and £3,513 per head with the average looking good at 250.5 pence and £1,608 per head.

 

Calves remain very dear indeed, there were 44 on offer with bulls to £675 and heifers £520.

 

In the sheep section we saw the first new season lambs which sold to 542p/kg and £257.40/head.  The overall average settling at 520.39p/kg.

Finished hoggs are a very variable commodity at this time of year with many vendors bringing their tail end charlies.

The best on offer made 452p/kg and £273.36 per head, the SQQ average was 415.7 pence and a typical hogg in the 39-45kg bracket sold at £178.47.

Cull ewes thin on the ground with only 211 forward, the best to £258 to average £158.66.

A better entry than last week with a total of 398 on offer.

Spring definitely in the air with plenty of farmer buyers looking for young cattle now that the grass is looking rather greener.

A smaller entry of 1199 sheep included the first show of the season of Spring lambs with an outstanding trade to peak at 572p/kg and £247.40 per head with an overall new season lamb average of 520.39p/kg.

A run of 7 pens of the best meated continentals averaging an excellent £247.14.

Strong Mules £150 plus with plenty of meated crossbreds £178 to nearly £200/head.

Slaughter rams good to sell with any flesh nicely £100 plus and the better sorts £160 plus.
