Livestock & Dairy: Bakewell Market

Bakewell Market Report Monday 30th March

A busy day for the last Monday before Easter with 668 cattle and 1,596 sheep on offer.

An outstanding trade for all categories of sheep.  Calves off the clock, Store cattle attracting such comments as ‘the dearest ever seen’ and OTM cattle on the week with only finished cattle failing to reach last week’s figures.

There was a decent entry of 452 store cattle with a tremendous trade from start to finish with the younger and smaller cattle looking particularly well sold.  Steers sold to £2,560 to ave £1,648, Heifers to £2,390 ave £1,467 and young bulls to £1,900 ave £1,322.

There were 105 finished cattle forward and a good solid trade for all, but with prices a shade less than last week.

Top figures 437p/kg and £3,950 per head.

The average for the 71 heifers was a respectable 369.4p and £2,369 per head.

OTM cattle continuing to be in short supply with only 81 on offer.  Top figures 375p/kg and £2,616 per head.  The average was a useful 256.4 pence and £1,658 per head.

As previously mentioned, the 30 calves were in great demand with bulls to £840 and heifers £690.

In the sheep department it was the Easter Lamb Show.  Spring lambs are in short supply with Easter being early this year.

There were 86 forward and clearly very much wanted.

The champion lamb made 900p/kg to gross £387, full details later in this report.

The SQQ average for Spring lambs was 607.9p/kg making a typical lamb in the 39-45kg range worth £254.09.

A good turnout of 1,216 hoggs sold very well indeed with top figures 499p/kg and £243/head.

The SQQ average was 432.2p/kg making a typical lamb in the 39-45kg bracket worth £186.76.

284 cull sheep this week with ewes to £299 ave £162.88.
