Livestock & Dairy: Bakewell Market

HPLS Suckled Calves Friday 17th October

The HPLS Annual October Calf Sale has been held at Bakewell once again with the overall quality of the stock on offer that can only be described as outstanding.

The sale was preceded as it was in 2024 by a pre-sale show with some vendors putting up one or two of their best to win the trophy that was first presented over 50 years ago.  After 6 classes with first and second prize winners, the judges decided that the champion for 2025 was a tremendous shapey British Blue steer from Jack & Jilly Storer, Wincle, just 8 months old and showing tremendous promise, it sold for an unbelievable £2,220 after a titanic tussle between 2 show men.

The sale started promptly at 10.30 with the bulls and was followed by the steers and heifers.  All cattle were generally sold in good sized, even bunches that not only allowed the sale to progress well but it kept the cattle calm and better to handle for the market staff.  The last cattle were sold before 1.30pm and that allowed the buyers ample time to remove their purchases and get them settled in their new homes.

Trade on the whole was unreal with the averages way up as would be expected with the finished cattle trade continuing to be strong.

Bagshaws would like to thank all who made the October sale a huge success.  The New Year sale on behalf of the High Peak Livestock Society will be held on Friday 16th January with the March event on 13th March.
