Livestock & Dairy: Bakewell Market

Suckler Sale Thursday 7th August

Two lovely herds of cows combined at Bakewell on Thursday 7th August and a large crowd of potential buyers gathered to bid for the quality cattle on offer.

The first herd was the property of Joe Webster, Church Broughton who has decided to start milking at Gorsty Fields.  This brought in to the market a superb herd of Lim x & Sim x commercial cows and calves.  The cows were big and had Feb/March born calves at foot.  Trade was fast from the start with cows regularly £3,200-£3,700.

Two outfits passed £4,000 with the top price of £4,450 for a 7 year old Limmy cow with a 4 month old heifer calf at foot and scanned 3 months back in calf.  She was purchased by Messrs Binns at Leigh, Staffordshire who bought 4 of the better outfits on the day.  Second top call was £4350 again, for a Limousin Cow, 4 yrs with a steer calf at foot and she heads to a commercial suckler herd in South Derbyshire.

8 in calf cows sold to £2,900, whilst a super run of 11 in calf heifers sold really well and topped at £2,850 for a Limmy x due March to Limousin.

The second and larger stock of cows was property of Warren Harvey & Family who farm on the of the Weaver Hill in North Staffordshire.  Native Hereford cows had been bred by the family for years with numbers supplemented last year by the acquisition of a group of Blue x and Angus heifers from Staffordshire dairy farms.  The blue heifers sold well to a top price of £3,000 for a 33 month old with an Angus steer calf at foot (11 weeks).  The majority of these heifers sold in the £2,300-£2,700 bracket.  The Angus heifers looked well on the sale day and topped at £3,080 for a heifer with a Lim steer calf at foot (3 weeks) to David & Charlotte Hadfield at Tideswell Moor.  The final group to be sold were the older Hereford cows that were stronger and rose to £2,850 for a black Hereford with Hereford heifer calf at foot, she sold to Andrew Dakin who farms at Smalley, Derby.

Bagshaws would like to thank all who made the sale a success including the 2 haulage firms who got the cattle to market on great form and in good time to allow sorting, the Bakewell staff who always do an excellent job in handling the stock and to all of the buyers who we wish good luck with their purchases.
